Timeline:

Monday, November 16th, 2009: Entry fee for first-round competition is due. We must have a full team by Monday!
Wednesday, November 18th, 2009: Case Materials: The article, template Power Point slides for the deliverable, and instructions emailed to teams.
Wednesday, November 18th - Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009: Prep Time: Teams prepare analysis for article using the template Power Point slides, provided by Leeds, for final deliverable.
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 at 11:59p.m. Mountain Standard Time: First-Round deliverable due back via email for judging.
Monday, December 7th, 2009: Results from the First-Round announced
Friday-Sunday, February 19th - 20th, 2010: Competition Semi-Finals and Finals in Boulder, CO

Owen Energy Audit - Volunteer Opportunity

The initial goal would be to collect data and analyze the buildings energy flow. From there we can evaluate our carbon footprint, make recommendations, and ultimately implement some energy savings/efficiency initiatives. This could be an ongoing process, where year-by-year figures will be compared; progress can be assessed, and system improvements can be documented. It would be great if we could eventually branch out into the larger Vanderbilt community!

2009 Net Impact Conference

Networking Dinners
Connect with fellow conference attendees at one of our no-host networking dinners. Dinners will be at various restaurants in Ithaca on Thursday and Friday night. You can sign up during registration on Thursday and Friday at the Barton Hall Information Desk. Please note there is limited space at the dinners and a $20 cash deposit is required at registration.
Career Coaching
We are offering career coaching at the following times:

Friday, November 13, 10:30am to 5pm
Saturday, November 14, 10:30am to 3:30pm

You can sign up at the information desk at registration in Barton Hall, or in Sage Hall room 232. Coach bios will be available in the Guidebook supplement. Nashville Tree Foundation Re-leafing Day

Owen Net Impact and 100% Owen are sponsoring the Nashville Tree Foundation Re-leafing Event on Saturday, 11/21, 8 a.m. - Noon

Although we realize many of you will be away for Thanksgiving break, if you are in town, please come support The Tree Foundation. They will send out teams of at least 3 people who will plant approximately 3 trees over a 4-hour period. Dress should be appropriate for the weather as planting will take place rain or shine. There will be a demonstration tree planting conducted at Riverwood Church of Christ at 8:30am, so all volunteers should arrive at 8am to register. Bring shovels and/or mattocks if you have them as that will help with the limited supple of tools. Work gloves, hot chocolate and donuts will be provided!

Smart Printing Initiative - Reduce Wasted Paper By 25%

Net Impact believes that Owen can reduce its excessive paper consumption by using the Smart Printing practices listed below. If we can reduce our paper consumption, we can spend the saved money toward buying paper with a higher recycled content, thereby further enhancing our efforts. We can also prove to the school that we don’t abuse our free printing privileges, which no one else at Vanderbilt has, and is in danger of being taken away; VU’s paper consumption was reduced in half when they started charging students 4 cents per page.

WAYS TO CUT DOWN:

1. Print double-sided: Default your computer to print double sided.

–Double click the printer
–Select Printer | Properties from the menu
–Click the “Printing Preferences” button on the General tab
–Go to the Finish tab
–Check “Print on both sides”
Or… when printing
–”Print”
–Go to “Properties”
–Select “Finishing” tab
–Check “Print on both sides”

2. Print multiple slides on one piece of paper.
–In the print dialog box, choose “Handouts” from the “Print what” drop-down, and then choose the number of “slides per page” you want.

3. Use print preview before you print.

4. Print only the necessary pages in a document instead of the whole thing.

5. Minimize the number of drafts you print.

6. Reuse paper that has only been printed on one side.

7. Use electronic versions of documents when possible.

8. Use “Shrink to Fit” - an option in print preview dialog boxes which will shrink content down to fit on fewer pages.

9. Ask professors to provide their own printed slides to avoid jamming student printers right before class. Also, copiers use less ink and energy than printers!

10. Give yourself a few extra minutes to print so that you can wait in the event of a bottleneck or a printer jam rather than reprint to another printer.

11. Talk to your professors:
–Ask them to print two-sided handouts if they don’t and thank them if they already do this!
–Ask for readings in digital format
–Request to receive and submit homework electronically
